Award-winning Finnish director Aki Kaurismäki (Lights in the Dusk, Le Havre) returns with the highly-acclaimed The Other Side of Hope. This original comedy-drama recounts the unlikely friendship between a travelling salesman turned restaurateur and a Syrian refugee whose sister goes missing on the Balkan migration route.
The auteur’s signature deadpan humour is as on point as always, highlighting serious contemporary realities treated with style, wit and heart. Khaled (Sherwan Haji) flees war-torn Syria only to find himself caught up in the bureaucracy of the detention centre. As Khaled prefers to take his chances on the streets, Wikström (Sakari Kuosmanen) leaves his alcoholic wife to start a new life. Their chance encounter sets off a journey into a new world, where they help each other to navigate a dubious present.
With a rockabilly soundtrack and Kaurismäki’s poker-faced direction, The Other Side of Hope is at once hilarious and human – a critique of the institutions that still greet vulnerable modern-day asylum seekers in Europe.
