Aġenzija Żgħażagħ and Spazju Kreattiv have joined forces to create a music initiative for young talented singer-songwriters aged 16 – 18. Six young people are taking part in Songcraft 2019 with a number of mentorship sessions and are working hard towards the showcase concert on the 27th of April.
Our young singer-songwriters Mark Ciantar, Lara Micallef, Paolo Micallef, Maya Morrow, Bradley Spiteri, and Maria Vella are working with mentors Alex Alden (singer-songwriter, judge at X Factor Malta), Ivan Borg (Red Electrick), and Alison Galea (Etnika, Beangrowers, The Shh) to bring their work up to a professional level, and to perform for a public audience at Spazju Kreattiv. Members of the Spazju Kreattiv communications team will also be guiding the young participants in relation to marketing their music and therefore potentially launch their careers whilst Youth Workers from Aġenzija Żgħażagħ will follow closely their progress.
Tickets for the Showcase Concert happening on the 27th April 2019 are now available where you are invited to listen to this new material released by these young performers.
Mark Ciantar
Mark is 16, and finds inspiration for song-writing in his experiences and emotions. His friends and their experiences provided the inspiration for is chosen song. Mark signed up to Songcraft because he has a passion for song-writing, but feels that he needs to improve his skills in doing what he loves.
Lara Micallef
Lara is 18 and is from Msida. She uses metaphor and symbolism in her work – lyrics for her are just as important as the melody. Lara is taking part in Songcraft to strengthen her performance skills and her stage presence. She’s looking forward to receiving professional advice from her mentor.
Paolo Micallef
Paolo is 16. Song-writing provides an emotional outlet for Paolo – what he feels and experiences comes out in his song-writing. For his song, he wrote the lyrics first, and then built up the melody from there. Paolo joined Songraft to work on his song-writing skills.
Maya Morrow
Maya writes instinctively, and records her ideas on her phone or on paper as they come to her – sometimes she has so many ideas, she can’t hold on to them all! She works on a song, and leaves it for a few days before coming back to it to improve it. Maya signed up to Songcraft to grow as a singer and to improve her song-writing skills.
Bradley Spiteri
Bradley is 16 and goes to Junior College. He sees himself as a storyteller, but for him, the melody always comes first. His chosen song had a sad melody, so the story he tells with it is sad too. Bradley signed up to Songcraft to improve his skills and to gain experience doing what he loves.
Maria Vella
Maria is 18 and plays the keyboard. For her, music is an outlet for her creative and emotional expression, in an almost spiritual way. She writes in different languages, and has been writing music since she was very young. Maria joined Songcraft with the hope of eventually launching a musical career.
A big thanks to our mentors for sharing their knowledge and experience with these young people. We know you’ll be proud of them and their hard work!
