Sunday, September 19, 2021 – 8.30pm

“The Hidden Angels of Luchino Visconti” tells of the great man and director that he was, through the eyes of his closest collaborators and the unpublished images from the photographic archive of Mario Tursi, the photographer who followed him throughout his life. Visconti’s cameramen, who have restored the vision of his genius in this documentary, have done so in silence, without fanaticism or exaltation, and for this very reason they are his “hidden angels”. There are many ways of framing a landscape, a face, just as there are many ways of telling the story of a man, his life, his passions, his character, sending a message to the world. The studies, analyses and reflections proposed by those whose task it is to examine his thought have been able to dissect even the deepest sensibilities of the master, but never through the quite unusual angle proposed here. A work, in Visconti’s case, which has a “plural” dimension, needs the help of many other people to be completed. This is how a film is born. This is how the eyes of the “hidden angels” restore what he imagined. Each witness has his own personal vision of Visconti, filtering his emotional light through the lens of his own human and cultural experience. Luchino Visconti: a treasure for all humanity.

Boston, Massachusetts, 1920. Two Italians, Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti, are sentenced to death, their only crime being that they were anarchists. The whole world revolts, the squares fill up, not only the lives of two men are at stake, but the ideals they represent. Millions of voices are raised in dozens of different languages. They demanded justice for Sacco and Vanzetti, but nothing could save their lives. On 23 August 1927, Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti are handed over to the executioner and executed by electric chair, becoming martyrs of injustice and symbols of freedom.

Almost fifty years later, in 1971, director Giuliano Montaldo made a film about their incredible story. The title was “Sacco and Vanzetti” and it immediately became a manifesto against intolerance, injustice and the death penalty. Sacco and Vanzetti is a huge international success. The soundtrack, “Here’s to you”, by Ennio Morricone and Joan Baez became a symbol of freedom and defence of human rights, raising the consciences of young people all over the world.

Thanks to the film, Sacco and Vanzetti, a rehabilitation committee was set up and in 1977 Michael Dukakis, governor of Massachusetts, proclaimed the rehabilitation of Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti, declaring their total innocence to the world.

In 2017, 90 years after the execution and 50 years after the rehabilitation, Montaldo’s film came back to light in a restored version.

The restoration of the film Sacco and Vanzetti is an opportunity to recount, through the documentary “Legal Death”, the extraordinary work of Giuliano Montaldo. The director explains the motivations behind a courageous choice and reveals his entire artistic/productive path. Montaldo’s account reveals the background of a film that has become fundamental to the history of Italian and international cinema.

A masterful example of how a masterpiece comes to life, despite the difficulties.

A precious lesson of values and professionalism to be passed on to future generations.

A due and necessary tribute to a man who had the courage to uphold what he believed in to the end.
