“…and there is something else next to the Zwinger and the Church of Our Lady – since more than ten years Dresden hosts an internationally recognised exhibition for contemporary art every summer, the OSTRALE.”
Kay Kaul followed OSTRALE with his camera for more than one year. His film documents the cycle of OSTRALE 2016 – from the planning and organisation, to the assembly, the exhibition’s opening, until the finissage. The OSTRALE lives from improvised charm and in general it puts art in an existential context. The location is set in the old preserved barns and haylofts of Europe’s former biggest slaughter-house. The timbered framework and unplastered walls offer an extraordinary ambience where the artworks get reinterpreted in interaction with the surrounding.
“Documenta of the East” was chosen as a playful title because meanwhile after ten years of development the OSTRALE has become the third biggest contemporary art exhibition of Germany. With a mix of professionalism, spontaneity and improvisation in their organisation, the OSTRALE team created an atmosphere for the exhibition which follows its own rules. This can be seen in the selection of artists, the room conception, the assembly and the exhibition’s spirit.
Kay Kaul, former participant of the OSTRALE, witnessed the display over a long period and his movie is not only giving an overview but also lets one take a look behind the scenes of the project, whose continuity is endangered.
