In classical Arabic music, heterophony plays a fundamental role in creating the enchantment and mellow trance known as Tarab. The 5 or 6 musicians of the classical orchestra (Takht) develop the capacity of playing the same tune, while independently ornamenting the original melody. This takes place in relation to complex rhythmic grids inside which the musicians follow independent trajectories. By offering a free navigation between instruments, these multiple voices allow the listener to experience Tarab.
Conjured Geographies is a composed & improvised collage of sounds collected by Tarek Atoui on previous projects, and combines them in heterophonic, Tarab inducing associations.
The sounds come for instance from projects like the Metastable Circuit he presented at the dOCUMENTA 13 in 2012, On and From Tarab at the Sharjah Art Foundation and the Serpentine Gallery in 2012, I/E Elefsis that took place in the Eleusian archeological site of Athens in 2015 and the Dahlem Sessions he presented at the anthropology museum of Dhalem during the 8th Berlin Biennial in 2014.
*The project is also part of the VIVA 2017 programme and the 2017 Presidency of the Council of the European Union.
