Circuits Away from the Comfort Zone – Sensing Satie

18 October 2020 @ 8:30 pm - 10:30 pm

Date and Time
Sunday 18th October, 2020, 6:30pm

After a brief introduction to the Away from the Comfort Zone project, the first performance kicks off online. SENSING SATIE features 2 works by French composer Erik Satie – the first set of Pièces froides and Vexations. The Pièces froides (Cold Pieces) are two sets of piano pieces composed in March 1897, a harbinger of his humoristic piano suites of the 1910. Vexations consists of a brief theme in the bass with accompanying chords, written using strikingly eccentric and impractical enharmonic notation. The inscription above the composition suggests the theme should be played 840 times. Dawn Williams performs Vexations 6 times whilst alternating between Piano and Toy Pianos. Owen Jay uses a Eurorack system using modules that may be considered adventurous for a live performance. Parts of the piano are processed via the modular system and by means of envelope followers, effects and other sounds are triggered by the pianist.
