Billie Piper reprises her Evening Standard Theatre Award-winning role in this modern reworking of the 1934 play, Yerma, by Spanish dramatist Federico García Lorca. This is a tale of longing and passion, that tells the story of a woman whose deep need for a child consumes her world. In this radical production, Lorca’s original rural setting is transposed to present-day London, where a woman in her thirties still faces the intense pressures placed upon her by the internal and external forces which are explored in the original work. The play explores many interpersonal themes like duty, isolation, jealousy and most of all, obsession – a desperate personal longing which finally leads to shocking, unthinkable measures.
Simon Stone directs this emotional tour-de-force starring Billie Piper (Penny Dreadful, Great Britain). The play sold out at the Young Vic and has received excellent reviews, with critics calling it ‘an extraordinary theatrical triumph’ (The Times) and ‘stunning, searing, unmissable’ (Mail on Sunday), while Billie Piper’s lead performance is described as ‘astonishing’ (iNews) and ‘devastatingly powerful’ (The Daily Telegraph).
