Shakespeare’s controversial comedy comes to the Bolshoi in an energetic staging which introduces us to the tempestuous relationship between the strong-willed Katharina and her ill-tempered suitor, Petruchio. Known for its innovative use of framing devices and subplots, this play about power struggles has been adapted for the stage numerous times and has also inspired the iconic film adaptations Kiss me, Kate (Cole Porter, 1968) and 10 Things I Hate About You (Gil Junger, 1999). The Bard’s work clings tight to its controversial status, dividing modern scholars, critics and audiences and offering insight into the changing politics of the Elizabethan period – as well as the persistent challenges faced by our own time.
Acclaimed choreographer Jean-Christophe Maillot succeeds in bringing out the wit and fast-paced athleticism from the Bolshoi Ballet dancers in Shakespeare’s comedy. Principal dancers Ekaterina Krysanova and Vladislav Lantratov clash, challenge and eventually give themselves to one another in a wonderfully entertaining production that can only be seen at the Bolshoi!
