Based on Alexandre Dumas, fils’ own passionate but short-lived relationship with the courtesan Marie Duplessis, The Lady of Camelias is a tragic love story about true love quashed by the morals of society. Armand, a young and naive member of bourgeois society, arrives in Paris, where he’s instantly taken with Marguerite Gautier. But their relationship, and Marguerite’s life, are at risk when she is diagnosed with consumption and Armand’s father appears to tear the lovers apart.
The subject of numerous adaptations – most famously, the lavish screen adaptation, Moulin Rouge! (Baz Luhrmann, 2001) – Alexandre Dumas fils’ melancholy novel breathes new life on the Bolshoi stage. Prima ballerina Svetlana Zakharova plays Marguerite – a woman seeking love and redemption from her life as a courtesan – in a production by the Bolshoi choreographer John Neumeier, who brings new emotional heights to the story with his work of rare beauty and tragic depth, accompanied by Chopin’s romantic piano score.
