Right from the very beginning, at our sacred ‘quċċija’, we’re obliged to decide. To step inside the box where everyone flocks. There are no doors or locks, just… expectations. Obligations. Frustrations. Life here goes on the way it always did. It’s not that it’s rigid. It’s just that you’re either out or in.
Welcome in. Does it feel nice? And safe?
Studio 18’s members, together with songwriting sister-duo, The New Victorians, explore what it means to be a young Maltese person, constantly navigating society’s expectations of you and your own expectations of yourself. The performance comprises original electro-acoustic music written with and for the company, inspired by a series of workshops held over the course of 2018. A contemporary Music Theatre song-cycle, complete with audience involvement and live sound manipulation, asks the question: are we constantly in a state of becoming, and never in a state of being?
