This radical retelling of a classic tale draws upon the fragmented images of a woman whose identity is lost in time, and places her at the very centre of a political revolution. Caught in the backfire of a politically unstable desert nation, a young girl named Salomé becomes a beacon of resistance, who must navigate through the turbulent politics of her time with wisdom, grit, and grace. From her role as the nameless beheader of John the Baptist in the well-known biblical account, to Oscar Wilde’s erotic retelling of the story in his play Salomé, the production employs and explores the cultural references which make up this intriguing character, and boldly works to flesh out the desires and motivations of a powerful female figure who only exists on the fringes of history and culture.
Multiple award-winning director Yaël Farber envisions this radical retelling, broadcast live from The Old Vic Theatre. Originally staged at Washington’s Shakespeare Theatre in 2015, this latest offering from Farber has received rave reviews, and was nominated for 10 Helen Hayes Awards – of which it won 7.
