When a recently-widowed Rachel Ashley meets her English cousin in Cornwall, he soon begins to fall for her charms. An ambiguous romance strikes up between them, one that may or may not be concealing the death of his cousin, who also happens to be her late husband.
My Cousin Rachel is a dark and smoldering drama laced with emotional nuance and a nagging central mystery that may never be answered — ‘can we trust Rachel?’. It’s a typical strong offering from iconic author Daphne du Maurier, whose works have been adapted by cinematic masters like Alfred Hitchcock and Nicolas Roeg.
This isn’t the first time that du Maurier’s story has been adapted for the screen. Written in 1951, the then bestseller quickly went into production — and became a box office hit featuring top actors Richard Burton and Olivia De Havilland. Here, du Maurier’s much-loved style is adapted by writer-director Roger Michell (Notting Hill, Changing Lanes), who together with actor Rachel Weisz (The Constant Gardener, The Deep Blue Sea, The Lobster) paints a complex portrait of a liberated woman. Together, they deliver a mystery that’s as curious and mysterious as any living human being.
