Le Corsaire is an exotic tale of pirates, slave girls, pashas, shipwrecks, poisoned roses and love at first sight. At the bazaar, the beautiful Medora, ward of the slave merchant Lanquedem, catches the eye of the Pasha. But the pirate Conrad also falls for Medora and resolves to embark on a dramatic kidnapping to save her from a life of slavery.
Loosely based on Lord Byron’s epic poem of the same name, The Corsaire was originally created to showcase the talents renowned prima ballerina, Carolina Rosati, and was first staged at the Imperial Ballet, in St Petersburg, Russia. This is one of the Bolshoi’s most lavish productions, here adapted from ballet master Marius Pepita’s 19th century classic by the choreographer Alexei Ratmansky. Complete with an awe-inspiring shipwreck and dramatic scenery, it’s a grand romance – a classic piece tailored to lovers of dance and theatre.
