In this acclaimed psychological thriller, Australian director Cate Shortland (Somersault, Lore) crafts a minute study of two characters set in close quarters.
Clare (Teresa Palmer) meets charismatic but brooding teacher Andi (Max Riemelt) while photographing East German architecture in Berlin. The instant chemistry between the two leads to a one-night stand at Andi’s place – but nothing can prepare Clare for what she’s about to wake up to. With all exits in the abandoned apartment block sealed tight and no access to the outside world, Andi initiates a power game that will test Clare’s sanity, resourcefulness and wit. The suspense heightens as Clare and Andi’s relationship dynamics shift and change within the tight confines of the apartment – qa dynamic that starts with resistance, shifts to surrender and ends with defiance.
Adapted from Melanie Joosten’s 2011 novel of the same name by Shaun Grant (The Snowtown Murders), Berlin Syndrome is an elegant, gripping and intimate study of captivity and control.
