10 Years of European Films in 24 languages travelling across 28 countries
Date: Monday 10 October 2016
Venue: Cinema (St James Cavalier)
The Lux Film Prize, which the European Parliament awards to the best film produced in Europe, is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year! Last year’s winning film, Mustang, by Deniz Gamze Ergüven will be screened as part of the celebration, following a presentation by this year’s Maltese 28 Times Cinema and Lux Film Prize Ambassador. The screening will be followed by a live Q&A streaming, broadcast directly from the EU parliament in Brussels.
The Lux Film Prize is not only intended to promote European Cinema but it further serves as a cultural platform which transcends geographical and linguistic borders in order to create a European public sphere. Each year, since 2012, three films are nominated as finalists for the prize, where cinema-lovers across the 28 EU countries may watch and share these remarkable films in the European Union’s 24 official languages.
Film Synopsis for Mustang:
Early summer. In a village in northern Turkey, Lale and her four sisters are walking home from school, playing innocently with some boys. The immorality of their play sets off a scandal that has unexpected consequences. One of them being that their family home is progressively transformed into a prison; followed closely by instruction in homemaking which replaces the routine of school, and eventually, the numerous ‘send-offs’ into unwilled marriages.
